Come and listen to tales of Cornwall’s sunken treasure…

Roland Morris a marine salvor among many other things, once said ‘in order to find sunken treasure one has to start with a chart, preferably one made of old leather, soaked in oil’ and, by thunder, he found one as a young teenager in the 1920’s. Therein lies our story of one man’s lifetime quest to rescue from the sea what the sea has taken from the many.

Our voyage of discovery takes us into the darkness one stormy night in October 1707 with the loss of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell’s treasure laden Flagship Association and 1798 to the sinking of HMS Colossus and the recovery of fragments from the second Hamilton collection of antique Greek vases now housed at the British Museum.

Sue will also tell the story of the tragic events which led to the loss of Penlee Lifeboat’s Solomon Browne during a courageous rescue mission.

These fascinating stories together with the history of Penzance are told from Ship Ashore, itself a hidden treasure built by Roland Morris around an old Western National Bus in 1961 and enjoying a stunning waterfront location above Abbey Slip with fabulous uninterrupted views across Penzance harbour to St. Michael’s Mount.

Sue looks forward to welcoming you aboard Ship Ashore for a step back in time re-living seafaring tales of courage, daring, tragedy and dreams…
