Poldark is nearly upon us

It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for, and the anticipation is growing…Poldark Series 3 is about to hit our screens! Filming took place last autumn and I can exclusively reveal a few nearby  locations (and by “exclusively” I mean of course that I googled it and found an article in the Plymouth Herald in September last year). Sadly it’s too late now to hide among the gorse with some binoculars hoping for a peep of Ross and/or Demelza – whoever floats your boat. THAT topless scything scene is of course long gone and fondly remembered, as was the Series 2 Topless Scything Equivalent, the Bathtub Scene.

 

However if you’re anything like me, a Poldark episode – apart from appreciating the actors, costumes, historical context, story and galloping – is a perfect opportunity to play Spot The Cornish Spot. An hour passes with me shouting out “Gwennap! Charlestown! Penberth! Botallack! Porthcurno! How did they get there so quickly? It must be 30 miles.” etc. And luckily, we in West Cornwall have the lion’s share of the most beautiful of these locations. I remember sailing past Porthgwarra back in June 2014: the weather was utterly beautiful, the cove looked as ever like something that time had forgotten, and it was full of men in breeches and tricorn hats, and women in long frocks shouting things like “I’ve mislaid me skillage”. It was such a gorgeous few weeks of weather that apparently the director was getting twitchy – he needed some authentically awful Cornish mizzle and wind to shoot the series’ darker moments.  But the weather refused to play the game; series 1 hit our scenes and people were blown away by the beauty of the summer land and seascapes.

Now we can’t promise perfect weather like that all the time of course, but those beaches are beautiful whatever the weather, the mines are as atmospheric, the village coves like Penberth and Porthgwarra as historic.

 

Book one of the local B&Bs or accommodation providers on this website to get a good price and deal direct with the friendly owner. They will be able to offer you tips on where best to visit to play “Spot the Cornish Spot” when watching Poldark.
